Here's my best tactical "just add water" (and rod & line!) bass fishing lure kit recommendations. These kits arm you with exactly what you need to cover important bass fishing fundamentals and increase your chances of adapting to whatever bite that's happening when it's your time to fish.

Product Links in this article are part of the Bass Pro Shops affiliate program - and Fishing Discoveries receives a commission of between 1% and 5% for qualifying purchases (without this increasing the ticket price you pay).

Classic Inline spinner bass fishing lure kit

Mepps Basser Kit

If you were going to be dropped onto any body of water (river, lake or ocean) and had to pick one lure to tie on before you even knew where you were going; I bet the classic Mepps inline spinner would be the first choice for a lot of anglers. The great castability, attractive action from just a simple straight retrieve and ability to fish anywhere from surface or countdown to whatever depth you want are all big advantages.

These hand-picked bass fishing lures come in tried and tested productive colors and their original packaging is designed to be used as a really practical tackle box.

The kit consists of:

  • #2 Aglia Copper
  • #3 XD Gold Body/Gold Blade
  • #2 Aglia Long Silver
  • #3 Aglia Gold
  • #3 XD Silver Body/Silver Blade
  • #3 Black Fury Hot Firetiger
  • Reusable tackle box

As well as providing an attractive "aiming point", the pulsating hackles on the extra-sharp treble fishing hooks also have a hidden benefit. They actually help the hooks to be sucked into the mouth of a bass as it inhales the lure - giving you a better chance of hooking up securely. Incredibly Versatile Soft Plastics Bass Fishing Lure Kit

Yum The Do-All Dinger 76-Piece Kit

soft bass fishing lure kit

What if the bass are not willing to react to (or actively chase) a spinner? Here's where fishing worms in a variety of clever ways can really pay off. No modern bass fishing kit is complete without a good selection of soft baits.Again, supplied in a ready-to-use plastic fishing tackle box, this kit is beautifully organised and really well thought out. A 76 piece count freshwater fishing kit for bass that lets you:

  • Fish soft stickbaits on a wacky rig (wacky rig tool and O-rings included!)
  • Throw straight worms OR swimming paddle tail worms using the enticing "glide and jig" presentation of a shaky-head rig ( 1/8th and 1/4-oz  shaky head jig hooks included)
  • Texas rig straight and paddle tail worms into deep cover (3/8th-oz Texas Rig bullet weights and EWG hooks included)
  • Ring the changes with the proven, productive colors of green pumpkin, watermelon red flake, junebug, watermelon pearl jam, red bug, ghillie suit and elders magic
  • Adjust between 4" and 5" length baits (with a total of 56 soft plastic baits included)

The adaptability of these presentations allow you to test out exactly what the bass are responding to on that day. Whether it is a static/twitched wacky rig on a spawning bed, a swimming bait punched into cover or searching lots of water with the finesse "glide" of a sinking shaky head (that you can also bounce off rip-rap and other bottom cover). Including Dingers of both straight "stick" style worms and swimming tails covers so many bases and makes this a truly amazing fishing lure kit.

Bargain Lipless Crankbait Bass Fishing Lure Kit

Bass Pro Shops XPS 5-Piece Rattle Shad Kit

Rattle Shad Kit

Again with an eye on versatility and covering fundamental bass bites - the ability to count down your bait and then work it at different depths to find where the fish are feeding is really powerful. The vibrant action combined with audible rattle (and the ability to burn these over and around structure as well as through open water) helps you cover a lot of water quickly. While these style of baits are highly effective in their own right, even if you don't hook up - they will often reveal where interested bass are; so you can work them with other baits if necessary. Like most lipless cranks, these are great for long casting too.

The color range supplied lets you adapt to different stains and water clarity - and is a good fit for the color-choice strategy outlined in my best spring bass baits guide.

Premium Squarebill Crankbait Bass Fishing Lure Kit

Strike King KVD 13-Piece Square Bill Crankbait Kit

Confidence should be sky high when carrying Kevin VanDam custom fishing lures - particularly when it comes to crankbaits. His knowledge and prowess with this style of lure may well be unmatched in the world of bass fishing. With over 6.3 Million Dollars of tournament prize money wins (and a ton of other incredible achievements) it's probably worth paying attention to a complete fishing lure range he puts his name behind.

Once feeding depth is known, picking a squarebill that will run consistently at that depth shifts the odds strongly in your favour. PLUS, in this kit you have the silent (non-rattle) versions which are a good "change" option for bass pressured by a succession of rattling baits. The 12 pcs bass fishing lure kit comes supplied in a 360 box - which makes up the 13 total pcs of fishing tackle in the full product.

So you get:

  • Five 1.5 Silent Cranks
  • Three 1.5 Rattling Cranks
  • Three 2.5 Silent Cranks
  • One 2.5 Rattling Crank
  • 360 box

  • Paul, interesting – have you got some sort of deal with Bass Pro Shops? Starting in the 1970s I bought plugs and other kit mail order from the US, chiefly from Bass Pro, since availability in UK was very limited except for intrepid individuals such as Ken Latham of Potter Heigham; these days postal costs are so high that it’s not worth it, I find, and a good variety of the soft plastics I now use exclusively can be had – I buy from AGM Lures in Cheshire, very wide range and excellent service.
I’ve visited the Bass Pro branch on the fringes of Toronto – I love these huge N.American outdoors emporia! Even bigger and better is the huge Cabela’s just south of Detroit, been there a few times with my buddy when I was over there hunting groundhogs in Ontario.
Re selection kits, they’re not for me – as an individualist and long-time angler I insist on picking out my own lures…
    Anyway, an interesting piece, thanks.
    Regards, Tony

    • Hi Tony, you might be interested to know that Cabela’s and Bass Pro are part of the same company – and I’ve always enjoyed visiting Bass Pro shops (there’s even one in Las Vegas) when I’ve been in the USA.
As it says in the article, the links to products are Bass Pro (or Amazon) affiliate links which have (usually) between a 1% and 4% commission value to Fishing Discoveries. While it’s not going to make me rich any time soon, the occasional dollar here and there can help go towards some of the website hosting fees, email service monthly subscription and other costs of publishing the free articles.

Cheers as always for your contributions,
      Very best wishes

      Paul
