Mixed fishing tackle from Fishing Discoveries

The Fishing Discoveries Story

My name is Paul Gaskell and I became fascinated with fishing from the age of six - partly as a way to copy and impress my big brother Ian! When we inherited my grandfather's tackle, we quickly became obsessed with how these strange tools could be used to conjure fish from the water. Because my grandfather (whose antique reel you can see above) fished using flies, lures & bait for almost anything that swam - I became determined to master as many styles of angling as possible. As I grew up I found I also wanted to study freshwater biology - gaining my doctorate and working in research until 2008.

By combining passions for biology and fishing I'm now able to offer a unique perspective to support your learning and enjoyment of angling. I've never lost sight of that childhood fascination with fishing and the gear used for "fish conjuring"...

Really enjoying everything. Learned more in the last few weeks than the
 previous 20 years.

Hi Paul, I have been practicing the skills!

I went to the Aire last week and had a double hook up with Chub and a
lovely wildie.

Many thanks for last months training.

Email feedback on "The Nature of Fly Fishing"

From my point of view I think you have written what will become one of the most important texts on fly fishing.

It will be interesting to see the reaction from the angling community. Whatever the reaction now, at some point in the future, I think it will become the reference point for our understanding of our quarry and how and why we pursue it.

I feel you judged the books language perfectly. I imagine that was one of the trickiest decisions in the writing? Erudite where needed to carry weight but accessible enough for most adults to get it even if they had to work a bit as Charles talked about in the forward.

Lastly thank you. I’ve read it 3 times now. It’s already looking battered and well travelled but  each time I read I still get a sense of, actually it’s a sense of peace. A peace that sits opposite frustration. Frustration at other books of its ilk purporting to convey knowledge, but more the peace that comes with having my own inquisitive thoughts fleshed out, explained and ordered.

Wherever Fish Swim: There's your Next Fishing Adventure

Old time anglers seemed to be great at fishing the different seasons. Easily picking out the right gear for the different species and methods on offer from month to month. Perhaps nowadays there are too many "latest fad" methods and must-have tackle - and the choice is overwhelming.

Fishing Discoveries exists to inspire you and then to remove any barriers to whatever angling experiences you want.
