About "Nymphing Bible Owners' Bonus Media"

The videos in this course bring to life some of the key topics covered in the pages of "The Fly Fishing Bible of Nymphing".

When it comes to actual "field use" of sighters and indicators - or the physical process of constructing and chemically treating traditional style French leaders (plus on-stream fishing with ladder leaders or streamers); there are many actions that are far better communicated in video.

  • Hi , Wanted to thank you for writing “The Fly Fishing Bible of Nymphing”.
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it and have learned so much. I’ve been fly fishing since I was around 12 yrs old and now at 65 am reaching a new level thanks to you. I’m on my second pass thru the book and finding many additional nuggets. Can’t wait to get out on the streams next month here in New England, US. In fact I’m going Steelhead fishing at the end of this month in NY and will incorporate many learned details from your book. Going all in on your techniques for nymphing.
I do have a question on one of the knot combinations mentioned in the book on bottom of page 73 for tying Tippet to Casting Line/Leader . You recommend a figure eight stopper on the indicator end and a figure eight loop on the leader end. Forming a girth hitch with the figure eight loop around the indicator and sliding it down and jamming against the stopper knot. Am I interpreting this correctly?
Another question is would this be reliable with lines of similar diameter or does the girth hitch need to be tied in smaller diameter line to catch the knot?
Would this work for for 8 – 10# Steelhead using appropriate weight line? Didn’t see a picture series for this combo in the book so thought I’d ask.
Thanks again for the new journey.

    • Dana – first of all thank you for such a cool comment.
Secondly – your interpretation of how the knot connection works is exactly correct.

This connection works well even in lines of the same diameter and it is also the same connection knot combination used by UK (fixed-line) “pole” anglers to target carp up to around 20lb with an appropriate strength of elastic.

The tip end of the elastic has a short length of braided cord with a stopper knot in it – and the girth hitch in the main (fluorocarbon monofilament) line forms the attachment – which needs to be extremely strong in order to withstand the pull of double figure carp.

Overall, there should be no worries about using it for steelhead (with, as you say, appropriately strong line). If you didn’t want to discover a problem while hooked up to the Steelhead of a lifetime, I would take the exact line you are planning to use and attach it to the wide, plastic-cushioned part of the handle of a bucket using a long-loop girth hitch. Make your stopper knot and girth hitch connection (with the long tail end of the girth hitch section wrapped around the handle of a broom. Add measured amounts of water (or tins of beans, exercise weights – anything you have a good idea of the weight) and try to dead lift a series of different weights. Work up in weight until something snaps. Maybe it breaks at the knot, maybe the break is somewhere else in the system – but is it up to the kind of force you find in your alternative connection methods?

Although at the other end of the scale (micro thin “Spanish” leaders) a tactic of “daisy chaining” monofilament sections together to make different rigs is, ironically, the subject of Issue #2 of “River Perspectives” which will be out around 25th March (with follow up details in Issue #3 in April).

Each issue only lasts a month, so if you want to subscribe ahead of #2 and #3, the sign up form is here: https://fishing-discoveries.ck.page/products/pauls-river-perspectives-fly-fishing

      Very best wishes,

      Paul

    • Hi James, yes that would be by far the most common option for me.

Possibly the only exception would be as part of a rig designed to fish downstream, against the current (rather than dead-drift).

      Paul

  • Hi I recently purchased your book “The Fly Fishing Bible of Nymphing”
I’m eagerly waiting on it’s arrival.
Received your email and password, signed into Fishing discoveries.
Clicked on “Nymphing Bible Owners’ Bonus Media”
When I click on start course it takes me to the sales page to buy the book “The Fly Fishing Bible of Nymphing”
    Am I doing something wrong?
    kind regards Alex

    • Hi Alex,
When you click on “Start Course” it should open up the course outline (with all the chapters and lessons listed out). Clicking on any of those chapter/lesson headings should open that content as long as you’re logged in.

The button will only say “Start Course”, “Continue Course” or “Restart Course” if you’re logged in (otherwise the button says “Course Outline” and it will prompt you that you need to be logged in and own the course to access it.

If you get that reminder after pressing the “Start Course” button, you should try refreshing the page and/or clearing the cache for your browser (you can google specific instructions for clearing the cache for your device and browser). The other thing to do is to make sure you have the most up to date browser and also operating system installed – otherwise you can get glitches occurring where the website won’t display correctly.

Let me know if that is any help…

      Paul
